Osteonecrosis Directory
Osteonecrosis is the death of bone due to a lack of blood flow. It is also called avascular necrosis, aseptic necrosis, or ischemic necrosis. Osteonecrosis most often affects the ends of the thigh bone near the hip or knee. It may also affect the upper arm, shoulders, knees, ankles, or even the jaw. Osteonecrosis of the jaw, commonly called "jaw death," is a rare condition linked to the use of certain osteoporosis medications. Bone death caused by osteonecrosis can result in damage or collapse of surrounding tissues and joints. It is important to receive proper, early treatment to prevent permanent joint damage.
