Jeannie Dixon is an artist… in a big way.
A bill board artist. I paint the bill boards.
Whirrrrr...
Stroke by stroke, she reproduces images like this photograph onto a giant outdoor canvas… all by hand. She loves the physical nature of her job. So when the 44-year-old was diagnosed with crippling arthritis… it was a bolt from the blue.
Yeah, I thought I had another 20, ya' know, 20 something years to go.
Arthritis runs in Jeannie's family. It affects both her mother and grandmother. But Jeannie has an advantage over her older relatives… modern arthritis drugs.
How did the new medicine work for you?
Rheumatologist John Scott says arthritis research has led to quicker diagnosis and more drug options. And today doctors are better able to tailor the treatment to the patient.
An experienced rheumatologist is gonna' look for the medications that are going to suit both the patient's lifestyle and the patient's needs.
The drugs have newfangled names like biologic response modifiers. But their purpose is clear... Decrease pain and inflammation, and slow down joint damage.
We've had excellent success with diseases that in the past have been difficult to control
Jeannie takes a combination of anti-inflammatories and prescription pain killers.
If it wasn't for the medication, I'd really have a problem.
There's a chance Jeannie's arthritis will go into remission. And that would be great. But for now she'll have to depend on modern medicine to lend a helping hand. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
